Dr hab. inż. Radosław Swadźba from Łukasiewicz – Upper Silesian Institute of Technology was a speaker at the NOMATEN Hybrid Seminar, organised by the National Centre for Nuclear Research (NCBJ). His presentation focused on the microstructure, oxidation and degradation of protective coatings applied to TiAl alloys and nickel-based superalloys under high-temperature conditions.
On 11 September 2026, the NOMATEN Hybrid Seminar, organised by the National Centre for Nuclear Research (NCBJ), was held with a focus on advanced materials and their applications under high-temperature conditions. Among the invited experts was Dr hab. inż. Radosław Swadźba from Łukasiewicz – GIT, who delivered a presentation entitled “Microstructure, Oxidation, and Degradation of Protective Coatings on TiAl and Ni-Based Superalloys for High-Temperature Applications.”
Modern aircraft engines operate under increasingly demanding temperature conditions. Raising operating temperatures is one of the key approaches to improving propulsion efficiency and reducing fuel consumption, while simultaneously placing stringent requirements on structural materials in terms of resistance to oxidation, corrosion and degradation. Of particular importance in this context are TiAl intermetallic alloys and nickel-based superalloys, which combine a favourable strength-to-weight ratio with mechanical properties suitable for operation at elevated temperature.
In his presentation, Dr hab. inż. Radosław Swadźba presented research findings concerning the development of protective coatings, microstructural design, and processes occurring during the oxidation of TiAl and Ni substrates. The results made it possible to establish relationships between the microstructural characteristics and chemical composition of the coatings and their behaviour during oxidation.
The research presented forms part of ongoing efforts to develop durable, lightweight and effective surface protection systems for materials intended for use in next-generation aircraft engines. Their development is important for improving the durability of materials operating under extreme thermal conditions and for further advancing technologies used in the aerospace sector.
Also present at the seminar were representatives of Łukasiewicz – GIT: dr inż. Magdalena Sroka, dr inż. Tymoteusz Jung and mgr inż. Agnieszka Sasiela.
Dr hab. inż. Radosław Swadźba’s participation in the NOMATEN seminar provided an opportunity to present research conducted at Łukasiewicz – GIT and to exchange knowledge and expertise in the field of advanced high-temperature materials, protective coatings and materials technologies for the aerospace sector.
