We hosted students from all over the world as part of the SUPER (Sustainable fUture steel Production and pEople Recruiting and skilling) project. The program began with workshops at Łukasiewicz – GIT, introducing participants to the world of steel – its production processes and importance for the economy. Dr. Fabio Ferri presented the project’s objectives, while Christian Standaert discussed the key role of steel in today’s world.

Over the following days, 45 students, PhD candidates, and young professionals from across Europe embarked on an intensive journey through Upper Silesia:

  • visiting the Museum of Metallurgy in Chorzów
  • witnessing red-hot steel at ArcelorMittal Poland
  • exploring production at CMC Poland and Huta Łabędy S.A.
  • and visiting research laboratories at Łukasiewicz – GIT

Each experience broadened their knowledge and inspired the creation of new solutions. The program culminated in student project presentations as part of RACE (Raw & Circular Economy Expedition). Ten teams presented ideas addressing challenges facing the steel industry. The winning project, “Will the Electric Arc Furnace (EAF) be the future of steelmaking?”, perfectly reflected the direction of Europe’s green and digital transition.

A symbolic end to the program was a shared walk through Gliwice – the perfect finale to a week full of inspiration and new experiences, combining the industrial heritage of the region with the innovative vision of the next generation.

The SUPER project, carried out by eight partners from five EU countries and supported by EIT RawMaterials, demonstrates how to combine industrial tradition with modern technologies. Łukasiewicz – GIT is responsible for the educational component, nurturing the future leaders of the steel industry.
